Environmental and Emissions Proficiency Testing
Environmental and emission measurements are areas where performance depends not only on analytical accuracy, but also on field implementation, sampling, transportation, chain-of-custody traceability, and disciplined calculations working together. A stack gas measurement or a wastewater analysis is not merely a single instrument output: the verifiability of the measurement gains meaning through the suitability of the applied method, operator competence, calibration approach, measurement uncertainty, and the integrity of reporting. For this reason, in the environmental and emissions field, Proficiency Testing (PT) is one of the most powerful tools through which laboratories and measurement teams can regularly demonstrate technical competence.
What Does Environmental & Emissions PT Verify?
Environmental/emissions PT programs make performance visible across several critical dimensions:
- Accuracy (bias) and precision: how close your results are to the reference/assigned value and how repeatable they are
- Method compliance: standard-compliant application, correct units, and correct calculations
- Sample management: risk of loss or contamination during sampling, preservation, transport, and storage
- Calibration and traceability: gas mixtures, flow meters, weighing and volumetric systems, standard solutions
- Reporting quality: calculations and corrections (dry/wet basis, O₂ reference correction, temperature–pressure corrections), and uncertainty statements
This verification provides critical assurance, especially in sectors where regulations create enforcement and permitting processes based on measurement results (e.g., energy, cement, iron & steel, chemicals, waste incineration, etc.).
